Il Mare, “the sea.” A surf hotel on the Wakasa coast in Takahama, Japan.

We designed every room to face the water, each opening to a beachfront balcony above the Sea of Japan, with the terrace restaurant set right at the shoreline. The scale is intimate, just a handful of rooms, so the setting leads: the coast, the light, the sound of the waves.

Chef Laurent Tourondel’s L’Amico, just off Sixth Avenue.

We designed the room as an escape from the city, the calm of a countryside meal against the energy of New York. Reclaimed wood and burnished metal give it a quiet warmth, and the chairs rework the Windsor form in walnut and blackened steel. At the center, a copper-clad wood-fire oven holds the room to the kitchen.

A first look at our redesign of The Algonquin Hotel.

On West 44th Street, the Algonquin has been a gathering place for writers and performers for over a century, known for wit and creative exchange since the days of its famous Round Table. We approached the guestrooms as reinterpretation rather than restoration, keeping the building’s compact proportions and letting its history set the tone.

Inside the rooms, walnut and ebonized oak, aged bronze, and charcoal velvet bring warmth and permanence, while blue-greens, soft neutrals, and a black accent echo the mood of old New York. Above each headboard sits a triptych from the hotel’s extensive Al Hirschfeld collection, including a Central Park drawing on gold leaf found only here.

Park Hyatt Doha, in the details.

In the Msheireb Downtown development, we designed the hotel’s three dining spaces: Anis, a ground-level bistro; Opus, an all-day dining room on the third floor; and Sora, a Japanese restaurant on the 21st floor. Across the rooms, the design works in warm stone, carved wood screens that rise into the ceiling, and select works from artists of the Association for Modern and Contemporary Art of the Arab World.

A summer measured in trips: Japan, Portugal, Denmark.

Back in the camera roll, I lingered on the few days I had in Copenhagen. Conversations with sharp, generous people. More photographs than I need of buildings, of small design details, of places I wanted to hold onto. I stopped by 1 Hotels while I was in the city.

Already thinking about the next visit.
