Detail of a wall painting in the tomb of King Ramesses I in the Valley of the Kings. He reigned circa 1295-1294 BCE as the first monarch of the 19th Dynasty of the New Kingdom.
The King is identified by his birth name enclosed within the left cartouche near his head and a variant of his throne name within the cartouche on the right.
Ramesses I is welcomed into the next world by the deity Anubis identified by his characteristic jackal head. Anubis is god of death, embalming, and mummification among several other functions.
