Gorgeous places like La Jolla, California have enormous potential. Many houses in the area were built in the 60’s and 70’s, and today need some care to be modernized whilst maintaining the character of the house.

But the landscape is all about California, particularly San Diego. It is sunny and grey, misty and bright, cold and warm, green and dry. Bordering Mexico and the world at large.

Inspired by Persian gardens, with the help of Paradise Nursery and landscaper John Ebert, this self-sufficient garden has many fruits growing trees including peach, apple, lemon, persimmon, pomegranate, and my favorite, mulberry.

Accompanying the outdoor fireplace we have 50 year old olive trees from Ancient Olive Trees, and Monrovia plants everywhere.

Our client’s home is a project still in progress, nearing the finishing decorative touches, but for now the beautiful garden and pool is thriving and inviting. Swipe to see how it looked before!

The surrounding garden, inspired by Greece and Ibiza, focuses on the olive trees and lavender bushes, the gravel to keep it less structured and more free-flowing, enclosing the more structural trellis. The white trellis adds on and was difficult to imagine at first, but we felt the house needed a large outdoor shaded space for life and leisure.

Our client’s home is a project still in progress, nearing the finishing decorative touches, but for now the beautiful garden and pool is thriving and inviting. Swipe to see how it looked before!

We are very excited to announce that our project 150 Pembroke Residence is live and listed for sale in the Clearwater Beach Association. LA JOLLA GARDEN
Although California faces many water sustainability challenges, there are many sustainable landscaping options for home gardens that are balanced with the local climate and ecology in mind. A guidebook from the Pacific Institute about Sustainable Landscapes in California suggests the following key elements for a sustainable landscape: Build healthy, living soils, choose climate-appropriate plants, treat rain as a resource, and irrigate efficiently. These are methods we have always used in our landscaping projects, and we believe businesses can be part of the solution to sustainability. We love gravel instead of all grass gardens as they are low maintenance, don’t need water, and look beautiful.

EAST HAMPTON GARDEN
We love seeing our landscape projects grow and bloom for our clients and their families to enjoy, but with the intense heatwave spreading across the country, we also want to remind our followers to stay safe and shorten your time outside if possible. Nothing wrong with enjoying the view of your garden from indoors!

EAST HAMPTON GARDEN
If you want your landscaping to look full, lush, but tailored, now is the time to start gathering ideas and planning for next summer. Fall is the best season for any major landscaping makeover. Putting in new plants and trees in the fall gives them enough time to establish a root system, to better acclimate and survive the winter weather. During that time you can prepare your Spring gardening maintenance schedule. So now is the time to start saving any garden inspiration!
We love gravel instead of all grass gardens for the northeast and Hamptons like this project, as it’s low maintenance and keeps the ticks away. Ticks love moisture, so consider a gravel yard if your area has a high tick rate.

Our Story

De-Spec is an award-winning internationally recognized multi-disciplinary design practice, with a focus on the relationship between space and occupant.

By developing new spatial typologies, de-spec aims to produce an expanded model of architecture, one that is meant to be experienced both inside and out. The name de-spec is an abbreviation of the term ‘de-speculative,’ which refers to the practice initiated in response to the rising trend of speculative construction, including housing development, in which generic homes are built for an unknown occupant. The act of de-speculating refers to the production of experience through a privileging of specific contents and programs over general design strategies and aesthetic principles... www.de-spec.com
