David Gauld Architect, PLLC David Gauld graduated from Harvard College and subsequently received his Master in Architecture at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

He worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and then ran the New York office for Japanese architect Arata Isozaki where he was the project architect for the Guggenheim Museum SoHo and the Brooklyn Museum. After founding his own New York office in 1997, David Gauld Architect PLLC, he designed a new synagogue on Long Island and renovated the historic Sparks House at Harvard. The primary focus of Gaul

d’s practice has been on residential, retail, and museum design. His extensively published and award-winning projects include flagship retail stores in New York City, apartment renovations and new houses throughout the USA. He recently completed the expansion of Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach.

Three years after the funeral of my mentor, architect Arata Isozaki, I returned to Japan to see a retrospective exhibition of his work in a museum he designed in Mito City, an hour north of Tokyo. I had previously visited this cultural center in 1989, shortly before it was completed. It is called Art Tower Mito, and includes a 100-meter tall titanium-clad tetrahedral observation tower, commemorating the centennial of the city. I also visited Isozaki’s gravesite at a temple in Kyoto.
