IF CODES WERE DIFFERENT, WHAT WOULD YOU DO WITH AN EMPTY OFFICE BUILDING?

The challenges of converting a commercial space to a residential one is a complex maze of obstacles made up of laws, codes, and eligibility requirements. From zoning laws, parking laws, and NY State multiple dwelling laws to codes that state living areas cannot extend more than 30’ from a window, and windows located on an interior lot line cannot be used for light and air without a light and air easement with the adjacent lot. There are also provisions, including one that limits residential floor area (FAR), to 12, for buildings constructed after the enactment of the 1968 NYC building code.

Behold the bureaucratic ballet of the moment! The intricate pas de deux between codes and creativity. In the spirit of any good business model and a blue ocean thinking exercise, our architects and designers considered what we would do with an empty office building, if codes and cost were not an obstacle...

An unsolicited review of a surprising exhibit.

How nice to be authentically surprised, to be momentarily displaced from the automatic and dropped in the middle of an intellectual labyrinth. It’s one of the things I love the most about art – when it surprises me.

Such is an exhibition titled “Fake it, Fake it – till you Fake it.” an immersive experience by Hirschhorn at the Gladstone Gallery in Chelsea. It’s one of those shows where you can’t buy a piece, its solely for the pleasure of the viewer, sort of like Tinguely’s Homage to New York, less the fire.

Hirschhorn’s is challenging the digital age and artificial intelligence. The installation is a finely orchestrated gigantic mess to be honest. Carboard tables, chairs, computers and related hardware, all cut and taped together by hand, leaving the viewer with no doubt this was done by a human without any mechanical help or even a straight-edge for that matter.

The cacophony forms a visual narrative that blurs the lines between the virtual and the tangible. These fragmented compositions invite viewers to question their own perception of reality. What is real? What is simulated? Hirschhorn’s work compels us to confront these questions head-on.

“Fake it, Fake it – till you Fake it.” is a thought-provoking exploration of our digital existence, a call to embrace the imperfect, the tactile, and the human. Hirschhorn’s vision challenges us to look beyond the pixelated screens and technical gadgets and engage with the messy, imperfect world around us directly.

If you find yourself in New York before March 2, I highly recommend visiting Gladstone Gallery to experience this captivating installation firsthand. It’s an invitation to step out of the virtual and into the visceral—a reminder that art, at its core, is a continuous exploration that will sometimes surprise.
