What if a physical therapy clinic could feel less like a medical office and more like a place of restoration, comfort, and healing?

That was the vision behind the new wellness center, designed by by
Together with the owners, we set out to create an environment that supports healing through all five senses—because neuroscience tells us that the spaces we inhabit can profoundly influence how we feel, recover, and connect.

✨ Sight – 's vibrant orange branding is balanced with Van Deusen Blue to create a calming, spa-like atmosphere.

🌿 Nature – Biophilic elements and abundant plants reconnect patients with the natural world, with plans for a future living wall.

🍂 Meaning & Experience – Each treatment room embodies a different season, celebrating movement in nature and reminding us of the rhythms of life, growth, and renewal.

🤲 Touch – Natural wood finishes and acoustic panels introduce warmth, texture, and a tactile connection to nature.

🍵 Taste – A welcoming tea station offers patients a moment to pause, relax, and nourish themselves.

🎵 Hearing – Acoustic treatments create quieter, more private spaces that support conversation, concentration, and healing.

🌸 Smell – Seasonal essential oils evoke memories and strengthen our innate connection to nature.

At EXD, we believe that design can do more than look beautiful—it can reduce stress, foster wellbeing, and become an active participant in the healing journey.

EXD Architecture has had the privilege of designing the past therapy spaces, but this time the owners were interested in designing a wellness center rather than a standard gym for a PT practice. beFIT wanted to think about how patients improve by associating their senses wellness. The spaces should be designed for different practitioners and their patients without knowing why they would be coming here.
EXD Architecture is interested in neuroscience’s role in design and wanted to bring elements of nature into this space.

Sight: Complementing the beFIT ‘orange’ branding with the Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue, makes it feel more spa-like and less high energy like the past beFIT gyms. There are plants everywhere, and as time goes on beFIT would like to install a living wall for their patients to enjoy. Each room is designed to represent a season of the year and the artwork on the wall shows people moving in nature as per that season.

Touch: Wood panels on all wall surfaces brings us back to nature

Taste: Small kitchen to provide freshly brewed teas and drinks for patients

Hearing: The use of wood panels brings in an element of warmth on the walls, while buffering the sound inside each of the spaces so it doesn’t travel, and practitioners can hear their patients.

Smell: Each room is equipped with plug in essential oils to invoke the scent of the season to connect patients to the outside.
