It's been 25 years. On September 11, 2001, 2,977 lives were taken including 412 first responders who ran toward the towers and never came home. This city was changed forever.

We lost sons and daughters, moms and dads, spouses, brothers, sisters, friends, and colleagues. We honor them today, and through our memories, they live on.

We thank the first responders who ran toward danger without hesitation. We thank the construction professionals who worked tirelessly first to rescue, then to recover, and finally to clear the site and the many who paid a great price in the years that followed. Some are still suffering today.

We thank you all for your service and sacrifice.

On this 25th anniversary, we remember that we can never be the same.

Earlier this week we joined Lumber at the Nasdaq MarketSite in Times Square.

Getting this industry that kind of spotlight doesn't happen often.
But the real value wasn't the bell or the building — it was the roundtable after, sitting with contractors from across the country comparing notes on what's actually working.

Last week was Construction Safety Week. This month is Mental Health Awareness Month. At Curtis, we don’t separate the two.

For 67 years, we’ve invested in keeping our people safe on the jobsite — better PPE, sharper processes, and increasingly, the technology we’ve helped build alongside our partners to see risk before it becomes injury. That work is never finished, and we don’t pretend it is.

But the harder conversation, and the one our industry has avoided for too long, is what happens inside the helmet.

Construction has a machismo problem. We’re an industry where “tough it out” is treated as a virtue, and where asking for help is too often read as weakness. The numbers tell us where that leads: construction workers are among the highest-risk groups in the country for untreated mental health disorders and su***de. That’s not a statistic. That’s somebody’s parent, somebody’s child, somebody’s partner. Acknowledging a mental health condition is no different than acknowledging the flu, a back injury, or COVID. It’s something that happens. It deserves treatment. And it deserves a workplace that makes treatment easier, not harder.

Safety isn’t only what you wear on the jobsite. It’s what you carry home.
