Keeping the UN digital environment secure starts with recognizing when something isn’t right.

“ClickFix” attacks use convincing error messages, update notices or instructions to persuade users to take actions that may compromise their devices.

If an unexpected message tells you to “fix” a problem, don’t automatically follow its instructions. Verify through a trusted source first.

While was underway in New York, a new open source community was taking shape in Burundi. At JuneTech 2026, organized by KIT- Digital Innovation HUB, volunteers from the TYPO3 community introduced the CMS to students, educators, young entrepreneurs and government representatives. TYPO3 is an open-source content management system and a verified Digital Public Good.

Through the Erasmus+ BRIGHTER partnership, the committee built a shared website model for five universities. It gives higher education a common, resilient foundation that each institution can adapt and others can reuse.

In meetings with the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and SETIC, one message stood out: ownership matters. With open source, public institutions keep control of their infrastructure and the skills to run it grow locally, along with decent jobs and business opportunities.

Next comes Women Building with TYPO3, a planned program to train 30–50 young women for careers in technology.

From quality education to gender equality and local innovation, this is the Global Digital Compact’s commitment to digital public goods and capacity building in practice. It is guided by the UN Open Source Principles, which the TYPO3 Association has endorsed.

Cyber threats can reach us wherever we communicate, including our mobile devices.

“Smishing” uses text messages to trick people into clicking malicious links, sharing sensitive information or taking other unsafe actions.

Whether you’re working at UN Headquarters, in the field or on the move, the same principle applies: pause and verify unexpected requests before acting.

Last week, the African Union, United Nations and NATO came together for "From Collaboration to Transformation," a five-day workshop to continue partnership on advancing technology for African-led peace support operations.

The partnership aims to enhance command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations capabilities.

Through continued collaboration among UN Regional Service Centre Entebbe (RSCE), United Nations C4ISR Academy for Peace Operations, United Nations Department of Operational Support (DOS) and international partners, we are working to translate shared expertise into stronger institutional capabilities and more effective peace operations.

This is what partnership looks like in action!

From Headquarters to offices and operations around the world, mobile technology helps keep the UN connected.

That also makes protecting our mobile devices an important part of protecting our digital environment.

Be cautious with unexpected messages, links, QR codes and authentication requests and keep security in mind wherever you connect.

As AI becomes a bigger part of how we work, how do we make sure we're using it responsibly at the United Nations?

As Chief of the Information Management Section, Yujun Pian helps lead efforts to make AI adoption across the UN Secretariat accessible and responsible.

That means putting the right guidelines and safeguards in place, keeping people involved in the process and making sure colleagues have the resources they need to use AI with confidence.

Hear from Yujun about how the United Nations Office of Information and Communications Technology is helping turn AI governance into something colleagues can put into practice.

As the UN continues to operate in an increasingly connected environment, everyday tools like QR codes require everyday vigilance.

Cybercriminals can use malicious QR codes to direct users to fraudulent websites or capture sensitive information.

Before scanning, consider the source and verify where the code leads. Small actions help strengthen our collective digital security.

The conversations sparked during continue to inspire new perspectives on building a more inclusive digital future!

Confidence Osein, Founder of Internet Safe Kids Africa, took that conversation to the next level with her contribution to UN Open Source Community Day 2026: “Who Is Left Out? Designing Open Source for Real-World Digital Realities in Underserved Communities.”

"For me, localization is not simply about adapting technology to a place. It is about understanding the people, conditions and realities that shape how technology is actually experienced," said Confidence Osein.

From shared devices and language barriers to limited digital literacy and affordability, the realities of underserved communities remind us that access alone does not equal inclusion.

Building on the momentum of , this work highlights the importance of embedding safety, usability, trust and local context into open-source design from the start.

In order to advance digital inclusion, the communities we aim to serve are not left out of the technologies we build.
