August 22 is the last day to catch Future Schools at the National Academy of Design! Designed by B-KD in collaboration with National Academy of Design, Future Schools transforms three of the nonprofit’s galleries into an alternative learning laboratory—a library, classroom, and multipurpose forum—envisioning participatory art education through an exhibition, a performance series, and evolving programming.

Rather than a static display, the project creates learning environment that reimagines the production of knowledge through a dynamic, open-access setting. The exhibition design reactivates the Academy’s legacy as an artist-founded school by supporting multiple modes of engagement—from teaching and discussion to informal gathering—through a custom modular system containing all elements necessary for activation by participants.

Curated by Natalia Viera Salgado and Nato Thompson, with programmatic support from Frank Dallas, the exhibition features commissions by Ad Minoliti, Christian Nyampeta, and WAI Think Tank (Cruz Garcia and Nathalie Frankowski) and a chalkboard drawing by Chloë Bass.

Revisiting Bethune Townhouse: As summer heats up in New York City, we’re taking a look back at projects of summers past. B-KD designed the back patio and rooftop of a townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village as a calm outdoor living space and urban garden, creating a site of respite for the client.

Using brick for the side walls and paving extends the materiality of the facade into the backyard, where the paving dissolves directly into the landscape without borders. The side wall flows into a custom waterfall, adding a sculptural and sound element with greenery behind. Furniture selection accommodates communal gathering and combines with lush greenery to promote an oasis-like atmosphere for the residents.

On the Air: Open House TV’s Sara Gore joined Koray Duman for a tour of B-KD’s Publisher’s Loft project in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Sited in a former shoe factory, the renovation of this loft showcases our innovative approach to clients’ unique needs, incorporating contemporary design into existing historic context in a thoughtful way.

The client’s existing space housed an expansive book collection cluttering living and leisure spaces. We embraced this as an opportunity to elegantly incorporate the collection into the loft without it overpowering the space. Custom shelving wraps around the perimeter at a 45 degree angle that allows the collection to be viewed from one direction, while reducing its visibility from the other and providing a 3D wall that animates as natural light changes throughout the day. The angular motif of the bookshelves is mirrored in the custom tilework flooring extending from the bathroom and kitchen into the living spaces, as well as the base of a custom-designed dining table. Subtle shifts in geometry, light, and texture turn a functional challenge into an integrated, dynamic living environment that balances utility with quiet delight.

To highlight the quality of the industrial manufacturing building, B-KD preserved historical wood beams and brick walls. Inserted elements—from fixtures to furniture—tie the space together with a contemporary feel.

One month into the 59th Carnegie International — North America’s longest-running international art exhibition held every four years at the — we’re taking a moment to look at some of the details from B-KD’s exhibition design. 

In line with this year’s curatorial statement, expanding on the title “If the word we” to consider the first-person plural as an evolving proposition shaped by listening, translation, and transformation, B-KD collaborated with exhibiting artists to design architectural interventions that present new landscapes in dialogue with their works. Sometimes, these interventions aim to create a productive tension with the existing gallery architecture, in which contradiction and cohabitation coexist and are celebrated. 

B-KD is led by iterative design that prioritizes listening as fundamental to supporting curatorial teams and working directly with artists to realize their vision. From Sofu Teshigahara to , B-KD shaped the way the assemblage of individual objects in display cases are experienced in dialogue with each other as visitors move through the space. Working with , B-KD created a meandering river-like pathway to position their collective’s hanging textiles as a forest that visitors can flow through. Positioned within existing architecture, Ana Raylander Martis dos Anjos’s piece “Justicia” is situated in the ceiling of a hallway for viewers to contemplate from below. The design provides layering of works that creates curiosity across spaces, and that position ’s masks in a thought-provoking tension with existing staircases in the main hall of the Carnegie.

The installation is on view through January 3, 2027.

We’re honored to have contributed exhibition design for the , presenting “Washwasha” in the 61st International Art Exhibition of di Venezia 2026. Curated by and .Nassar, “Washwasha” brings together six artists whose practices contemplate contemporary soundscapes in the UAE, shaped by migration, transience and long-term ties to the land. A phonetic transliteration of the Arabic word for ‘whispering,’ “Washwasha” suggests sound at the threshold of audibility—a starting point for exploring themes of memory, movement, and rapid transformation. From oral storytelling to poetry circles and locally initiated broadcasting efforts, sound has long functioned as a platform for collective self-representation. “Washwasha” situates contemporary artistic practices within this continuum of transmission and exchange.

B-KD’s design provides a journey through the pavilion that traces the progression of sound through multiple modes—from oral histories to movement, migration, and technology. Organizing the exhibition as a sequence of chambers that respond directly to the acoustic signature of the space’s materiality and architecture, visitors are led from zones of close listening to areas consumed by noise and sonic overlap.
