Phytoremediation. New residential project in Kinderhook, NY. Taking up an asphalt parking lot and designing a garden where we will partner with native ornamental grasses like Indian Grass (Sorghastum nutans) and Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) to phytostabilize petroleum residue in place preventing spread via wind surface run off or leaching into groundwater. Native grasses have deep root systems that can grow up to eight or ten feet into the earth. Plant roots also release sugars and amino acids that feed soil bacteria and fungi accelerating the breakdown process of hydrocarbons. It was right around the time of Hurricane Irene in the Catskills where I learned about phytoremediation. A little over ten years year, I get to actually do the work. Thrilled. Plants are such Powerful Beings.
