Here is why you should skip the heavy fall cleanup this year:

🍂 Leave the Leaves: Fallen leaves aren't trash—they are winter blankets! Many overwintering butterflies, moths, and even queen bumblebees rely on this warm leaf litter to survive the freezing winter months.

🌻 Save the Stalks: Those dried, brown flower stems might look dead, but they are nature's bee hotels. Nearly a third of all native bees are cavity nesters, meaning they need those hollow stems to lay their eggs for next spring!

Keep the Wood: An old wooden log or piece of driftwood resting in the garden provides vital shelter and insulation for a whole ecosystem of beneficial insects.

🛑 The #1 Planting Mistake that is Hiding Your Garden from Pollinators! 🦋

Look at the difference between these two planting styles!

When we buy native plants, it is so tempting to space them out one by one across the mulch to cover more ground (like the left side). But here is a professional eco-landscaping secret: Always plant in clumps! 🌼

Here is why: Bees and butterflies are not born knowing where your garden is; they have to search for food from the air. A single, isolated flower is incredibly hard for them to find.

When you plant the same species in large groupings (ideally about 3 feet or 1 meter wide, like the right side), you create a massive, brightly colored "neon sign" that is incredibly easy for them to spot from high above. It also saves them energy because they don't have to fly as far between flowers! 🐝

Plus, as you can see... it just looks so much more lush, intentional, and beautiful in your yard!

🦋 The 5-Minute DIY to Bring More Butterflies to Your Garden! 💧

Planting native flowers is great, but did you know pollinators need a safe place to hydrate, too?

Butterflies often struggle to find shallow water sources, and deep birdbaths can actually be dangerous for them. That is why they need a "puddler"!

You can make one today using things you probably already have lying around:
1️⃣ Grab a shallow dish (like this terracotta plant saucer).
2️⃣ Fill it with smooth river stones.
3️⃣ Add just enough water to keep the stones wet, leaving the tops exposed.

Why this works: The butterflies will land on the warm, dry tops of the stones and use their proboscis to safely drink the shallow water and absorb essential minerals! 🌿✨

🛑 Stop guessing what to plant! Did you know different pollinators look for completely different flower shapes? 🌸🐝

Here is a quick visual cheat sheet for your native garden!

✨ Left Side (Hummingbirds): Notice the shape? Hummingbirds are specifically drawn to bright red, tubular flowers like this native honeysuckle. Their long beaks and hovering flight style are perfectly designed to reach deep inside these narrow tubes for nectar.

✨ Right Side (Bumblebees): Bees look for something entirely different! They prefer flat-topped yellow, white, or purple flowers like this yarrow. Because they are heavier and don't hover while feeding, they need a wide, sturdy "landing pad" to rest on while they gather pollen.

When we replace empty grass with the right mix of flower shapes, we can feed the whole ecosystem! 🌿

2nd year planting Zinnias along a 25 foot stretch on the Lane side of my home. Purchased 13 packs of seeds from “The Dollar Tree” of all places! Last years flowers grew 38” high and bloomed to the killing frost.
It is a real pleasure watching all the pollinators and Hummingbirds enjoying these flowers.
