A lock replacement in NYC often isn’t what people actually need.

If you just moved in and want the old keys to stop working, a rekey does that. A locksmith changes the pins inside your existing cylinder, your old key stops working, and the hardware on your door stays exactly where it is. Much cheaper.

A full replacement is for when the lock itself is the problem: you have to lift or shove the door to turn the key, someone tried to force it, it’s old enough to lack anti-pick and anti-drill protection, or you’re moving to a keypad or smart lock.

The NYC-specific part worth knowing: most pre-war buildings use mortise locks, a rectangular body set into a pocket cut into the door edge. They can’t be swapped with off-the-shelf hardware. The faceplate and backset measurements have to match, or you end up with a damaged door and a bigger bill.

One last thing. If you see a $15 service call advertised, that’s the setup for a bait-and-switch. The tech arrives, calls your lock “exotic,” drills it out, and hands you a $400 invoice. Ask for a flat quote before anyone touches the door.
