⚡ A long power outage changes everything.
A few hours without the grid is one thing. But during a 48+ hour outage, I can’t treat my backup system like unlimited grid power. Every watt-hour matters.
That’s why I manage my system in layers:
🥶 1 — Protect the priority loads.
Refrigerator and freezer come first. Food protection is non-negotiable.
⚡ 2 — Watch the energy, not just the battery percentage.
I pay attention to how many watt-hours I’m actually using and cut unnecessary loads when needed.
☀️ 3 — Let solar determine the daily energy budget.
Good solar day? I have more flexibility. Poor solar day? I conserve earlier instead of waiting until the batteries are low.
The biggest lesson: backup power isn’t just about how much battery capacity you own. It’s about how well you manage the energy you have.
My goal isn’t simply to survive the first night it’s to still have power on Day 2, Day 3 and beyond.
💬 Reality check: If the grid went down right now and stayed down all weekend, how long would your setup last?
