Why do backflow preventers need to be tested? The state of New York department of Public Health requires all testable backflow preventers are to be tested soon after installation, at no more than twelve month intervals after that, and after any repairs. What is a backflow preventer? A backflow preventer is a device that prevents backflow through a cross connection. What is backflow? Backflow is the undesirable reversal of flow of water or other substances such as solids, liquids, or gas through a cross connection into the public water system or consumers potable water system. What is a cross connection? A cross connection is an actual or potential connection between a public water system and any other source or system through which it is possible to introduce into the water system any contaminating or polluting agent.
