Here’s a little gardening secret… 🤫🌱

Fall isn’t just for pumpkin spice 🎃 and cozy sweaters 🧣 (though we’re definitely excited about those too!). It’s also for planting! 🌱🍂

Fall is one of the BEST times to plant native plants in Wisconsin and Minnesota 🍂

Spring gets all the attention, but fall has some serious advantages:

🌱 Cooler temps = less stress
Your new plants aren’t battling summer heat, and you won’t be watering quite as often.

🌱 Roots before shoots
While the tops of plants are slowing down, their roots are still getting established. Plant now, and they’ll have a head start when spring arrives.

🌱 Fewer weeds
W**ds are slowing down too, which means less competition for your new natives.

🌱 Work with nature
Native plants are naturally adapted to the seasonal cycle. Fall is when many plants are dropping seeds and preparing for winter...so planting now is right on schedule 🍂

And the best part? You don’t have to wait until spring to start your garden.

🦋 Two swallowtails. Two very different looks AND two very different shopping lists!

The black beauty is a Black Swallowtail, while the yellow-and-black butterfly is an Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. Both are gorgeous and both need more than flowers to complete their life cycle.

🌿 Black Swallowtails need plants in the carrot family for their caterpillars. Native Golden Alexander is a great choice, along with garden favorites like dill and parsley.

🌳 Eastern Tiger Swallowtails lay their eggs on woody plants, including wild cherry, willow, and many other native trees and shrubs.

And then, of course, there are the flowers! The adults are generalists, but these are stopping by for nectar from plants like the Joe-Pye W**d and Purple Coneflower you see in these photos 💚

So if you're planting for butterflies, think caterpillar food AND butterfly food. That's when your garden really starts doing some work 🐛➡️🦋

🌸 Obedient Plant really lives up to its name

Push the flower one way… it stays.
Push it the other way… it stays there too.

This quirky native gets its name because the individual flowers can be moved around the stem and will obediently stay where you put them 🌿

🍂 Fall is one of the best times to plant a native garden!

Sean is starting a brand new shade garden, and this is actually a great time to get planting.

Cooler air means less stress on newly planted plants, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to keep growing. With winter dormancy ahead, plants have time to settle in and focus on building strong root systems.

So while the garden season might be winding down for some, we're still planting 🌿

🌾 Can we talk about native grasses for a minute?
Because WOW. They are looking good right now. 😍

When people picture a native garden, they're usually thinking about the flowers. But grasses are doing a lot of the heavy lifting behind the scenes.

They add height and structure, move beautifully in the breeze, help support taller flowers, provide cover and nesting material for wildlife, and keep the garden interesting long after many flowers have finished blooming.

And let's be honest… from the pictures here Big Bluestem, Switchgrass, Indian Grass and Prairie Dropseed are pretty enough to be the stars, too 🌾💚

If you're planning a native garden, don't forget the grasses!

🌿 “UNLESS someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”

We just read The Lorax to our kids. Reading this book as an adult hits a little differently 💚

This is why we do what we do.

Plant a native.
Leave some leaves.
Make room for pollinators.
Teach your kids to notice the little things.

Small choices add up 🌱
