It's almost that time of year again! Some people may have started already with the weather we have been having lately. Ideally, you want the daytime temp to be above 40°F and the night temp to be below freezing. Maple trees are what everyone tends to think of when it comes to syrup, but Black Walnut trees can be tapped for syrup as well! The two syrups share some similarities, but they also have some distinct differences that make them unique.

Silver Maple. The fastest growing Maple tree. Widely planted in the landscape for shade. With even a light wind, the tree produces a very nice shimmery effect due to the silvery undersides of its leaves. The trunks and branch unions can get very large with a wide spreading root system. Best planted in open areas away from sidewalks, sewer lines and foundations. Also know for limb failure due to poor branch structure. Best kept pruned with a thinner canopy to prevent failure. This was a fun one. Some brush clearing and tree removals. Keeping some of the more mature trees. Grinded out all the stumps. Planted some Green Giants and laurels. Then added 40 yards of mulch. What a difference!
