METechs® U-Shape Retractable Golf Impact Screens: Closing the Gaps, Raising the Standard
A serious home simulator is not just a “screen.” It is a system that must control ball energy, manage side protection, maintain clean sightlines, and retract reliably—every time. METechs® developed the U-Shape Retractable Golf Impact Screen solution to address the real problems golfers encounter in everyday use: corner gaps, unsafe side rebounds, bulky fixed frames, noisy operation, and screens that degrade prematurely at the edges.
Our U-Shape design combines a full-size main impact screen with retractable side screens to create a true three-panel hitting bay—while still retracting cleanly when you want your space back.
The U-Shape Advantage: A Safer, Cleaner, More “Finished” Simulator Bay
Most “three-sided” setups rely on separate curtains, bungee-mounted nets, or side panels that never truly meet the main screen. The result is familiar: corner gaps, exposed walls, and unpredictable bounce angles.
The METechs® U-Shape system is engineered as an integrated retractable solution—main screen plus side screens—designed to operate together as a single bay experience.
Key benefits include:
Better corner containment to reduce miss-hit risk and side escape
A cleaner visual enclosure for a more immersive simulator feel
Space efficiency: retract when not in use; reclaim your room
Purpose-built materials and hardware for repeated high-force impacts
Engineering Solution: Overlapping Side Screens with the Main Impact Screen
Corner gaps represent a critical safety limitation in conventional golf simulator enclosures. In typical configurations, the main impact screen and side protection are installed in parallel planes, leaving unavoidable discontinuities at the left and right boundaries. These discontinuities create high-risk escape paths for high-velocity golf balls, particularly during oblique impact events such as wedge shots, heel strikes, and mis-hits.
METechs® developed an integration method in which the retractable side screens are positioned to physically overlap the main impact screen. Unlike traditional side-by-side or flush-mounted configurations, this design introduces a controlled overlap zone that helps eliminate boundary discontinuities between screen surfaces.
The overlapping architecture delivers four practical outcomes:
More continuous impact boundary
The overlap region reduces the likelihood of ball escape through edge seams.
Tolerance under real-world conditions
The system helps maintain corner coverage despite installation tolerances and normal screen deflection under impact.
Simpler overall structure
The approach reduces reliance on rigid framing, stitched assemblies, or added impact wall panels—helping simplify installation.
Improved containment at the highest-risk zones
Overlapping geometry strengthens corner protection where many systems are most vulnerable.
METechs® was the first to design and implement a retractable configuration where both side screens overlap the main screen to close corner gaps.
Motorized Retractable Impact Screens: Built for Real Ball Energy
Retractable screens are common in light-duty applications, but golf impact environments are not light-duty. A fast golf ball can generate extreme instantaneous load at the point of contact. That force does not only stress the fabric—it transfers into the roller tube, mounts, and motor brake system.
METechs® advanced motorized retractable golf impact screens into a true impact-rated category by developing dedicated drive systems designed specifically for golf ball energy.
A major part of that evolution was our impact-capable motor and brake design:
Impact-resilient brake and holding behavior
Stable stop/hold under repeated hits
Hardware designed around shock loads—not just fabric weight
In our engineering standards, we developed impact motors designed to withstand up to ~2,000 lbs of impact force that can be generated by golf ball shots under demanding conditions.
Edge Durability: Laser-Welded Reinforcement Instead of Sewing
Screen edges are a primary failure point. Traditional sewing can introduce:
Needle perforations that weaken the fabric
Uneven stress distribution
Fraying over time, especially at tension points
Visible stitch lines that affect aesthetics and screen flatness
To address these issues, METechs® advanced an alternative reinforcement approach: laser-welded impact-screen edge construction rather than conventional sewing.
Laser-welded reinforcement improves edge consistency and helps reduce the risk of progressive tearing from repeated impacts—especially near corners and high-tension zones.
The 40-Foot Problem: The Retractable Drive Rod Module
Long-span screens create a separate engineering challenge: torsion, deflection, and drive stability across wide openings. As screen width increases, the system must resist twisting and maintain consistent movement and alignment.
METechs® solved this with a dedicated modular approach. We invented a retractable drive rod module engineered to support very large spans—up to 40 feet, with a dynamic center-support mechanism—specifically for retractable golf impact screen applications.
This modular drive concept is built to maintain structural integrity across large widths, enabling wide, clean enclosures without requiring overly complex multi-roller arrangements.
Designed for High-End Performance Without Luxury Pricing
METechs® U-Shape Retractable Impact Screens are built for customers who want:
A professional “bay” look without permanent walls
Reliable retractability for garages, gyms, and multi-purpose rooms
Strong edge longevity and impact-rated construction
A solution engineered specifically for golf impact—not repurposed from shade systems
Whether you are building a premium home simulator or outfitting a commercial facility, the U-Shape approach delivers a more complete enclosure without complex installation.
