Now’s the time to harvest your figs.
According to the LSU AgCenter, most figs in Louisiana ripen in early July. The trees are loaded right now with green, plump fruit, and it’s peak season for that heavy main crop. Check them daily—birds are watching too—and pick when they feel soft like a ripe avocado or start to droop.
Persimmons come later, in fall, but the same idea applies: a fruit tree in your yard pays off when the season hits.
If you don’t have one yet, this is the perfect reminder to plant a fig. With a little sun and space, you’ll be collecting your own harvest every July.

🍑 Peach Season Is Almost Here — Plant Now for Next Summer’s Fruit!
New Orleans winters are mild, but that doesn’t mean you can’t grow peaches — you need the right varieties. At Absolute Landscaping, we recommend planting container peach trees from November through February while they’re dormant. That gives the roots time to settle before the heat hits.
South Louisiana only racks up about two hundred to four hundred chill hours, so skip anything that need six hundred or more. Stick with true low-chill varieties like Flordaprince, EarliGrande, Gulfking, Gulfcrest, La Festival, La Pecher, Texstar, Delta, and Sam Houston. TropicBeauty and FlordaPrince also perform well if you can find them. They need roughly one hundred fifty to three hundred hours and ripen early enough to dodge the worst summer humidity.
Full sun, well-drained soil, and a spot that isn’t a frost pocket. Peaches hate wet feet, so raise the bed or mound if your yard holds water.
