Ross’s 1897 discovery didn’t just solve a scientific puzzle. It rewrote the rules of disease prevention. By proving that female mosquitoes transmit malaria, he shifted the world’s focus from treating illness to interrupting transmission. That single insight opened the door to modern vector control, environmental management, surveillance systems, and the entire operational framework led by professionals.

It also marked the beginning of a new era where public health could anticipate disease rather than simply react to it. Ross gave us the foundation for integrated mosquito management and the idea that controlling vectors is controlling disease.

Tonight, our trucks will be in the Desire Area, Pontchartrain Park, Gentilly Woods, Central City, Milan, Touro, Irish Channel, Garden District, and the Lower Garden District.

West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes collected from the East Bank of Orleans Parish. Treatment will be conducted as the weather permits, and we will continue regular surveillance.
