Brian told us he charges $150 to $180 an hour on a skid steer, then said the part most people leave out. He is not super busy.

The comments told him the rate was too high. So we ran his machine.

A 75 horse skid steer costs the same every hour. Depreciation eight dollars, fuel fifteen, DEF and wear about thirteen, and the operator at $27 is $38.61 once you carry the burden. That is $74.34 an hour before the calendar says a word.

Then the calendar talks. Insurance, storage and overhead do not care how many hours you bill. Over a thousand billable hours you need $115. Over eight hundred, $120. Over six hundred, $130. Over four hundred, $150.

Brian is not high. Brian is priced for his calendar. The man charging $85 at those same four hundred hours is $31.34 under cost every hour he runs.

Nothing changed except the hours you bill.

How many hours did you actually bill last year? Not ran. Billed.
