We're wrapping up this Castle Shores home, a slab-on-grade new build with bonus space above the garage and some pretty great details throughout.

There's a lot we like about this one. The vaulted living area with that floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace, the custom wood island countertop paired with sage cabinetry, and a front porch with timber posts that really finishes off the exterior.

And the owner had a few things high on her wish list, including a custom shower, fireplace, and that front porch. It's always fun seeing those pieces go from plans on paper to the finished product.

From the foundation to the finishing touches, there's a lot of work that goes into a build like this.

And seeing it all come together? That's the good stuff.

P.S. Usually when we show off a finished home, someone is already moving in. Not this time! This one is FOR SALE. Reach out to Jane Vikse Real Estate if you'd like to take a look for yourself!

What’s the footprint?
There’s a unique challenge to building in the Lakes Area. Water tables, county regulations, setbacks... before we can even start thinking about the layout and the look, we have to figure out exactly what we’re allowed to build and where we’re allowed to build it.

On some lake lots, every foot matters.

That means understanding the property, working through the regulations, and finding the best way to use the buildable space available.

It may not be the glamorous part of building a lake home, but getting the footprint right is where the whole thing starts.

And once that concrete goes down?

Now you can really start to picture it. 👊

Now this is where it starts getting real fun....

Every step of a new build has its challenges (and its rewards), but when you start seeing the construction AND the aesthetic come together? That’s the stuff!

Siding is up, stone is being set, colors and textures are coming together, and suddenly those plans we’ve been staring at for months are looking a whole lot more like a home.

Still plenty of work ahead, but this stage sure is a good one.

Stay tuned. This one’s taking shape! 👊

You’ve got the lake lot. You know where you want the house. And then the water table says, “Yeah... about that.” 😅

That was part of the puzzle for this Big Kandi Lake build.

The goal was a new home/cabin designed to take full advantage of the lake views, but the site itself needed some extra problem solving. With a high water table, we couldn’t approach the foundation the way we normally would. We used a shallower foundation designed to stay above it while still protecting the home from frost, along with soil corrections on site.

Then came the fun stuff. A standing seam metal roof, those lake views, and a home designed specifically for how the owners wanted to use this property.

And maybe our favorite part? Most of the details were worked out before we ever started building, so once construction began, there were very few changes.

That’s the kind of process we like.

Figure out the hard stuff early. Then you get to enjoy watching the home come together.

Labor Day was created to recognize the people whose work quite literally built this country.

More than 140 years after the first Labor Day, we're pretty proud to work in an industry that's still doing exactly that.

To our OakRidge crew and all the tradespeople we work alongside: the skill, long days, physical work and pride you put into your craft don't go unnoticed.

Today is a day for the workers.

And around here, we know some pretty darn good ones.

Happy Labor Day from OakRidge Construction! 🇺🇸

We got a pretty nice comment that said we get the job done “on time with efficiency.”

We’ll take that. 🙂

Truth is, a lot of that happens before we ever start building.

We spend quite a bit of time on the front end going through your project. What are you actually wanting? What’s the budget? What have you picked out? What haven’t you thought about yet?

We have our OakRidge Shopping List that we go through with you, we get bids ahead of time, and we try to get as many of those decisions made as we can.

Because once we get to the job site, we want to BUILD. 💪🏼

We don’t want to be waiting on decisions or finding out halfway through that something you really wanted changes the budget. We’d rather figure that stuff out together ahead of time.

It takes a little more work on the front end, but it sure makes things run a whole lot smoother once the crew gets going.

“Great service, great work ethic. They get the job not only done, but on time with efficiency. Would definitely use them again!”

Thanks for the kind words, Pam. We appreciate it!

Have you noticed some of the new home designs folks are choosing?

Though the monochromatic look is understated, this contemporary style sure does make a statement, doesn't it?

Clean architectural lines, asymmetrical rooflines and large windows give this style its distinctive look. And while you'll often see mixed materials, they're used with restraint. Here, the warm wood, charcoal siding and glass work together without making the exterior feel busy.

Another big part of contemporary design? Connecting the indoors to the outdoors. Those large windows aren't just beautiful—they keep the lake in view and make the setting part of the home.

And here's something you might not realize: a design this clean actually requires a LOT of precision.

With very little ornamentation, there's nowhere for the craftsmanship to hide. Rooflines, siding transitions, windows and material changes all have to come together just right.

Understated? Yes.

But this one definitely makes a statement.

What kind of vision does it take to see a beautiful lake home when you're starting with a quaint cabin?

Well—it takes vision (for sure), but also some practical, technical advocacy.

For this remodel on Norway Lake, the homeowners wanted to maximize their square footage and bring the covered lakeside porch closer to the water. County setback requirements meant we couldn't simply extend the existing footprint toward the lake.

So Jason worked with the county to find another solution.

By using a string-line setback between the neighboring properties, we were able to move the covered porch closer to the lake and gain an additional FOUR FEET of covered porch space.

Four feet may not sound like much on paper—but across an entire porch, that's a lot of valuable lakefront living space!

Sometimes bringing a vision to life means knowing what to build. Sometimes it means knowing what questions to ask and advocating for what's possible.

Take a look at where this Norway Lake remodel started... and where it's headed!
