The smallmouth world record was deleted from the record books 40 years later because someone claimed the fish had been stuffed with weights. David Hayes caught the 11-pound, 15-ounce smallmouth at Dale Hollow Lake in 1955, and for decades it stood as the biggest smallmouth ever recorded. Then, in the 1990s, the record was thrown out after an old accusation surfaced claiming the fish had metal and sinkers hidden inside it. That would have turned one of fishing’s greatest catches into one of its greatest frauds. But after more investigation, the record was eventually reinstated, and Hayes’ fish went right back on top. Which means the greatest smallmouth ever caught didn’t just survive the fight at the end of the line. it survived a 40-year fight in the record books.
