Popular in architecture from 1890s to 1930s these roof structures became popular due to appearance, ease of framing, material efficiency and useable attic space. In their era it was common to finish with soldered tin or copper.

This roof did not have leaks but condensation issues. They were brought on by partially covered soffit, under insulated R value in ceiling, under ventilated exhaust ventilation and the issue was amplified by a recently installed whole home humidifier. While the humidifier was the trigger it was the incorrect installation of other building materials that were the root cause. At Right Rate Roofing it is a passion to extend the life of existing roof systems. By correcting this home’s exhaust ventilation we contributed to the reduction of condensation and added decades of longevity back to the roof system. Right Quality, Right Rate!

“Hook Dam Counter Flashing” is referring to how the metal is bent that is received by the masonry joint. By “hooking” the metal it prevents water intrusion even after the mortar or sealant is falling out. This extends the life of the roof system past the life the shingle manufacturers intended.
