This customer called us out after noticing water entering their factory-built fireplace during heavy rain. After inspecting the inside, it was immediately clear the issue had been going on for years. Water had been leaking past the chimney crown, crossing into the inner liner system, and rusting out critical fireplace components from the inside out. Unfortunately, the damage had become severe enough that the fireplace was no longer safe to use.

Once we accessed the chimney top, we found the root cause — the original crown had no proper separation between the metal chimney pipe and concrete crown, and previous patch repairs had failed over time.

To stop further water intrusion and protect the home, we rebuilt the crown system properly while planning for a full fireplace replacement in the future.

These photos show exactly why routine chimney inspections matter. Water damage is slow, silent, and extremely destructive when left untreated. 🔥🏠

Your chimney: starts sweating mortar joints 😅

Don’t wait until bricks are falling, crowns are cracking, or water is pouring in. A quick inspection now can save you BIG money later.

When’s the last time you had your chimney inspected? 👀

What starts as a small crack or minor moisture issue can quickly turn into major masonry deterioration known as “brick spalling.”

Spalling occurs when water enters brick, freezes, expands, and causes the face of the brick to crack, flake, or break apart over time. In climates like Chicago, freeze/thaw cycles can rapidly accelerate this damage — especially on chimneys and older masonry structures.

Common causes include:
• Failed chimney crowns & caps
• Cracked mortar joints
• Improper drainage
• Leaking flashing or gutters
• Trapped moisture behind brick

The good news: catching these issues early can prevent costly structural repairs later. Routine inspections and proper masonry maintenance go a long way in protecting your home.

If you’ve noticed cracking, flaking, or loose brick, don’t ignore it — masonry problems only worsen with time and moisture exposure.

Another chimney brought back to life 💪

This chimney was in rough shape—deteriorating limestone and failing concrete crown that was so compromised it could be demo’d by hand.

We:
✔️ Tuckpointed the chimney from the roofline up
✔️ Removed the failing crown system
✔️ Installed a new poured concrete crown with proper 3” overhang
✔️ Added a drip edge + expansion joint for long-term durability
✔️ Sealed the crown to protect against future water intrusion

Now it’s built the way it should have been from day one—tight, sealed, and ready to last.

If your chimney is showing signs of cracking, leaking, or deterioration, don’t wait until it turns into a bigger problem.

When a window gets removed, it shouldn’t look like it was ever there.

This project was done alongside a general contractor during an interior remodel—closing up a window that was no longer needed. The goal? Make it disappear seamlessly.

From proper prep and structural tie-in to carefully matching brick, color, and mortar joints, every detail matters. No shortcuts—just clean, consistent work that blends right in with the existing wall.

It’s not just about filling a hole… it’s about making it look like it was built that way from day one.

Small damage up top can turn into big problems fast.

This chimney was starting to break down around the upper courses and crown—right where water does the most damage. Left alone, this is how you end up with loose brick, leaks, and costly repairs.

We took care of it the right way:
✔️ Power washed
✔️ Waterproof sealed
✔️ Tuckpointed upper 5 courses at the corbels
✔️ Sealed the crown with an elasticized sealant

Now it’s sealed up, protected, and ready to handle the elements again.

At JB Chimney LLC, we focus on catching and fixing problems before they get expensive.

A perfect example of how chimney damage builds over time—quietly and out of sight.

This chimney had deteriorating mortar joints all the way up the roofline and a failing crown that was already allowing water to soak in. That’s when you start seeing staining, brick damage, and eventually bigger structural issues.

We completed a full roofline-up tuckpointing to restore the integrity of the brickwork, and finished it off with a brand new poured crown to properly shed water and protect the chimney moving forward.

Not just a cosmetic fix—this is about stopping water damage at the source.

If your chimney is showing signs of wear, don’t ignore it. Small issues up top can turn into major repairs fast.

Another “looks fine from the ground” chimney… until you get up close.

This chimney crown was cracked, deteriorating, and already starting to let water in. That’s how bigger problems begin—moisture working its way into the brick, causing damage you won’t notice until it’s too late.

We rebuilt the crown the right way and sealed everything up to protect the chimney for the long run. Clean, solid, and built to handle the elements.

At JB Chimney LLC, we see it all the time—small issues up top turning into expensive repairs down the line.

If you haven’t had your chimney checked recently, now’s the time.

Out of sight… doesn’t mean out of danger.

This chimney chase cover looked “fine” from the ground—but up close, it was a different story. Rust had completely taken over, silently eating away at the metal and allowing water to seep in. That hidden moisture can lead to wood rot, mold, and costly structural damage most homeowners never see coming.

We replaced the failing cover with a new 316Ti stainless steel chase cover—built for superior corrosion resistance and long-term protection against the elements.

Don’t wait until small, unseen issues turn into big repairs. If it’s been a while since your chimney was inspected, it might be time to take a closer look.
