🏡 Front Porch Restoration — Built to Last, Finished to Protect

There’s something special about restoring an original porch the right way—preserving the character while using materials and methods designed to give it decades of additional life.

On this recent project, Lancaster Full Service Painting followed behind the incredible craftsmanship of The Philosopher Carpenter.

🪚 The Philosopher Carpenter's contribution to the restoration included:

- Replacing the deteriorating Douglas Fir porch decking with tongue-and-groove Black Locust hardwood—a naturally durable species exceptionally well suited for exterior applications.
- Reconstructing the front railing to match the original historic millwork, helping preserve the architectural character of the home.
- Building the new railing components from Spanish Cedar, selected for its excellent exterior durability, dimensional stability, and resistance to decay.

🎨 Once the carpentry was complete, Lancaster Full Service Painting took over the coating phase of restoration.

The previously applied coating was beginning to fail, so rather than simply painting over the problem, we:

- Scraped away loose and failing coatings
- Sanded the existing surfaces to create a sound foundation
- Spot-primed exposed and raw wood
- Applied 2 coats of premium exterior paint for a durable, uniform finish

Why does maintaining exterior wood matter?

Exterior wood is constantly exposed to sunlight, rain, humidity, temperature changes, and seasonal expansion and contraction. Once a protective coating begins to fail, moisture can pe*****te the wood and accelerate checking, splitting, swelling, rot, and deterioration.

Routine inspection, preparation, and recoating can dramatically extend the service life of exterior woodwork—and that's especially important when you're protecting high-quality materials and historic architectural details.

A properly maintained porch isn't just about appearance. It's about protecting the craftsmanship and materials already invested in your home.
