Here is a safety point every gas log owner should know. A vented gas log set relies on the damper being locked open, because a log set burning in a closed-damper chimney is a carbon monoxide hazard, plain and simple. That damper lock is one of the things a proper service visit checks and confirms. Two more worth burning into memory. If you ever smell gas, do not flip switches, do not hunt for the source, do not troubleshoot. Leave the home and call your gas utility from outside. And because carbon monoxide is completely odorless, a working CO alarm on every level of your home is not optional. A gas fireplace is a wonderful thing when it is set up and serviced correctly. Your pilot lights, you let go, and the burner drops out. Frustrating, but it is usually the safety system doing its job. A gas fireplace has a small sensor sitting in the pilot flame that generates a tiny electrical current, and that current is what holds the gas valve open. When it falls below spec, the valve closes on purpose. What drags it down? Dust film, corrosion, age, and yes, spider webbing inside the pilot or***ce. Spiders love that little gas opening. A technician measures the actual millivolt output instead of guessing, cleans the assembly back to spec, and the fireplace lights the way it should. Often that is the whole fix. The other nine months, that gas appliance sits idle inside a chase absorbing punishing Central Texas summer heat and direct sun. Low usage is not a reason to skip service.
