Homes built before the early 1900s often used an S-shaped trap under the sink. When water rushes down, it siphons the trap dry, and the little pool of water that normally blocks sewer gas disappears with it. Modern codes replaced the S-trap with the P-trap for exactly that reason. We still find the old ones behind vanities all over town.

If a room in your house has a smell you cannot explain, it is worth a look under the sink.
