🌱 Why We Take a Break From Seeding in Late Fall
When it comes to establishing healthy turf, timing matters—especially with Wisconsin’s unpredictable fall weather.
From approximately October 1 through November 15, we typically recommend taking a break from seeding. During this transitional period, temperatures can fluctuate significantly. Warm stretches may encourage seed to begin germinating, only for colder temperatures and frost to arrive before the new grass has enough time to properly establish.
Seeding during this window can lead to:
🌡️ Inconsistent soil temperatures
🌱 Uneven or incomplete germination
❄️ Young seedlings being exposed to freezing conditions
🍂 Poor establishment before winter
🌿 Less successful turf growth the following spring
After November 15, dormant seeding can begin. At that point, colder and more consistent conditions help keep the seed dormant through winter rather than encouraging premature germination. The seed remains in place until conditions become favorable for growth in the spring.
Sometimes the best thing we can do for a landscape is wait for the right conditions. A little patience now can help set the stage for healthier, better-established turf next season. 💚
