PUT THE PRUNERS DOWN! 🚨✂️
Before you go hacking away at your hydrangea, there’s a couple important things you should know.

First, some hydrangeas like the bigleaf, mountain and oak leaf varieties bloom on old wood, meaning next year’s flower buds are already forming. So pruning them in the fall means cutting off next year’s flowers! A big no no! 🙅

And while you CAN trim back panicle hydrangeas in the fall because they bloom on new wood, you can leave them be for now. Keeping them intact will give your landscape some additional interest throughout the winter months and can also provide a nice habitat for beneficial insects.

So be sure you know which variety of hydrangea you have, and prune accordingly!
