During these times that we have a combination of freezing and thawing, in continuous days with snow and rain and a saturation of the ground, our basement drainage systems can be overtaxed with ground water. Storm drains and floor drains should be checked to insure proper working order.
Sump pumps should be tested by connecting a garden hose to a low point drain valve at the water meter or water heater. By using the water heater drain, you can flush out the sediment that will collect at the bottom which will in turn make the water heater work more efficiently. The hot water does help to loosen any scale that can adhere to the pump and in conjuction with a rust and scale remover( CLR or some such product) will help keep the float clean and in good working order.
Older homes have floor drains that are connected to the sanitary sewer system. Having the drain cleaned with an auger or water jetter to remove roots and other sewage from the floor drain and the private sewer( that is the piping located on your property that connects to the city sewer system) will insure proper drainage of your basement.
Remember, we really don’t stop water from coming in to the basement, we only channel it to the removal systems that are in place.
