The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.”

More than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas on June 19, 1865, carrying news of freedom to an estimated 250,000 enslaved people.

That day became known as Juneteenth—a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the continued pursuit of opportunity and equality for all Americans.

Often called America’s “second Independence Day,” Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021, honoring a pivotal moment in our nation’s history and recognizing the contributions of Black Americans who helped build and strengthen our country.

Today, we reflect on the meaning of freedom, celebrate progress, and recommit ourselves to creating opportunities for future generations.
