You can put up a privacy fence, but at the end of the day, you are still looking at a fence.

Sometimes adding the right plants around a patio is enough to break that up and make the space feel a little more private.

It all depends on your sunlight and how much room you have, but there are a lot of different options you can use without going crazy on the budget.

It is just a good way to soften the space and make the backyard feel a little less open.

Here is a little look at some of the pool tile going in.

This is obviously a much smaller part of the overall backyard, but these are the details that help everything feel finished when it is all said and done.

You have gravel, excavation, grading, base prep, drainage, and all kinds of stuff that may disappear once the finished material goes in.

That does not make it any less important.

A lot of times, getting that stuff right on the front end is what keeps you from having problems on the back end.

A lot of newer homes have pretty tight lots, so the goal is to make the space feel a little more finished and a little less closed in.

On this West Nashville project, we added retaining walls to help level out the grade, privacy trees to help separate the space, fresh mulch, fescue sod in the front, and seed and straw in the backyard.

None of those things by themselves are overly complicated, but when you put them together, they can completely change how the property feels.

That is really what we are trying to do on these projects. Make the yard look better, function better, and feel like it actually belongs with the house.

A lot of backyards have plenty of space, but it's just not used well.

That is where a patio can make a big difference. It gives you somewhere for the grill, a table, some chairs, and just a place to hang out without feeling like you are sitting in the middle of the yard.

The biggest thing is making sure it fits the rest of the property too. You still have to think about grade, drainage, landscaping, and anything else you may want to add later.

Fall is getting closer, and this is a good time to start thinking through the projects you want done around the yard.

Maybe it is a fence so you have more privacy or a better space for the kids and dogs. Maybe you want a patio or hardscape project so there is somewhere to actually use the backyard. Maybe the lawn needs a fresh start with sod and landscaping.

You do not have to do everything at once.

But if several of those projects are on your list, it helps to plan them together so you are not tearing up something you just paid to install.

Fresh sod can make a yard look completely different in a day, but there is more to it than rolling grass over dirt.

The ground needs to be prepped and leveled. The sod needs good contact with the soil. The seams need to be laid cleanly. Then the homeowner has to keep up with watering while the roots start getting established.

The green finish is the part everybody notices. The prep underneath is what helps it stay that way.

Here is one little thing that can make a fresh sod install look a lot cleaner.

When new sod is meeting existing grass, we like to cut a clean edge first. That gives the new sod somewhere to sit instead of leaving a hump where the two areas meet.

If you skip it, the grass will eventually grow together, but the transition can stay uneven for a while and make mowing look rough through that area.

It is a small step, but it helps the finished lawn look like it belongs there.

New sod needs more than water after it gets installed.

The soil underneath needs to give the roots somewhere to go. Water needs to reach down into that soil, not just wet the top. And once the sod is down, pay attention to what it is telling you.

Yellowing can be a sign of too much water. Browning can mean it is too dry, but it can also be something like brown patch.

The big thing is to keep an eye on it and make adjustments instead of assuming more water fixes everything.
