Your thermostat is the control center of your HVAC system. If it reads the temperature incorrectly, or sits in the wrong spot, your A/C may run longer than needed or cycle on and off too often.

Keep it away from direct sun, lamps, TVs, supply registers, kitchen appliances and exterior doors. A hot exterior wall or afternoon sun can skew the reading. Check that it’s set to COOL and that its schedule wasn’t lost after a power outage. In humid Southwest Florida, many technicians recommend the fan setting be AUTO rather than continuously ON; when the A/C isn’t cooling, a continuous fan can keep air moving across the coil and affect indoor humidity. Replace thermostat batteries before the screen goes blank, and don’t set the temperature so low the system can’t reach it.

A smart thermostat can make scheduling easier, show runtime and allow adjustments from your phone. But if it’s set to 72 and your home stays at 79, that alone doesn’t mean the thermostat is bad. Low refrigerant, restricted airflow, a dirty evaporator coil, clogged filters, blocked returns or leaky ductwork can also be factors. A proper inspection checks the thermostat and the whole system. There’s no one-size-fits-all replacement age.

Is your A/C running longer than usual? Dirty coils may be part of the problem.

The indoor evaporator coil and outdoor condenser coil are where your system transfers heat, while the evaporator also helps remove humidity. In Southwest Florida’s humid, dusty, high-pollen conditions, dust, pollen, grass clippings, and biological growth can build up on coil surfaces and outdoor fins. This can reduce heat transfer, extend run times, raise indoor humidity and energy use, and sometimes contribute to a frozen coil or reduced cooling.

Watch for rooms cooling slowly or unevenly, longer run times, higher-than-usual energy bills, musty odors, visible dirt or debris on the outdoor coil, or ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines.

There is no universal rule requiring coil cleaning or replacement at a fixed age. Recommendations should follow inspection findings. Airflow matters too. Clogged filters, blocked returns, or leaky ductwork can imitate coil problems, so a proper inspection checks the whole system.

Depending on what we find, restoring system balance may include coil cleaning, duct cleaning and sanitizing, duct repair, duct replacement, preventative maintenance, HVAC repair on all brands, A/C replacement, or dryer vent cleaning.

Your filter is one of the easiest HVAC wins in your Southwest Florida home!

A clean, correctly fitted filter protects your equipment, but it is only part of the airflow path. Ductwork and return-air paths move the air, so clean filters, sound ducts, and open returns all work together.

Quick homeowner checklist:
• Confirm the filter is the correct size and fits snugly without gaps.
• Choose a MERV rating your system can handle. Higher is not always better if it restricts airflow.
• In a dusty or high-pollen Southwest Florida home, check the filter monthly and replace it according to its condition and the manufacturer’s guidance.
• Keep the return-air grille, return plenum, and register openings clear of furniture, curtains, boxes, and other obstructions.

Warning signs include a visibly clogged filter, weak airflow, whistling at the return, or a system that develops a frozen coil. If airflow problems continue after replacing the filter and clearing the returns, schedule a professional inspection.
