Creating tropical container gardens is a fun part of landscaping, and being able to incorporate unusual plants makes it even more so. Typically, we use annuals and a few tropicals when doing planters, but we have a couple of clients who get a more specialized design. One of the best parts about living in SW Florida is the availability of many exotics plants and their ability to thrive outdoors here. The pots seen here contain a mixture of rare and unusual foliage to enhance the beauty of this property.

Itā€™s October and a lot of our customers are heading back south for the season, so weā€™ve been super busy! Even with the changing weather and a little feel of fall, thereā€™s still plenty of flowers and foliage to see šŸŒø Hereā€™s what looked amazing this week šŸ˜Š

Our climate here in SW Florida can be a little damp for some cactus and succulents, but this ā€˜Ray of Lightā€™ agave thrives here! This specimen was planted in a container a year ago and has grown so fast that weā€™re going to relocate it to the yard. Donā€™t let anyone tell you that agave grow slowly in Florida!

Lots of unusual native plants bloom this time of year, and the preserve near our office is really lovely in the morning. From liatris to white mouth day flower and lichen, thereā€™s a lot to look at. The last picture shows how dodder, an invasive, parasitic vine can completely cover a tree or shrub and smother it. This is one of the few vines you should always remove ASAP before it kills your plants! šŸŒˆā­ļø

Itā€™s fall, and that means one of our most beautiful natives is flowering: Liatris. This stunning bloom shows up in September every year and is one of the few bright purple flowers we have. These are in the preserve near our office off Old 41, and they attract lots of pollinators. g

Just a little over two months and the native water garden is exploding with growth! The recent rains are helping establish the plants and have filled the pebble area in the center with water. Watching beds develop is the most rewarding part of landscaping šŸŒŗ

We spent this morning volunteering our time and donating plants to help Lovers Key State Park build a brand new butterfly garden at the Black Island Trail. As you can see, the area was a parking lot until today, when Artful Exteriors and a team of volunteers and staff from the park transformed it into a pollinator paradise! It turned out beautiful, and the park will be continuing to add and enhance the area with a water feature, benches, arbors and more over time. Check it out if you are at the park!
