This was an especially rough year for all gardeners and farmers, however I'm excited to ask her how it treated her and learn about her trials and tribulations; and how she is using those experiences, both positive and negative, to put her garden to sleep and prepare for next year's super el nino.

Urban farms in Chicago operate this way daily. Our suburban and rural ideas of farming operations is outdated. We can run market farms out of a little over a handful of 1/8 acre size lots....the size of a typical suburban yard.

The average adult consumes about 400 pounds of vegetables per year. A well-managed, intensive 1,000-square-foot garden plot can provide 100% of the annual vegetable needs for a family of two to three people, or provide a significant, highly abundant fresh food supplement for a much larger group like a neighborhood or community.
