Planning to build a new home? Think about energy efficiency before construction even begins.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make when designing a new home is focusing only on finishes, layout, and square footage — while overlooking how the home will perform every month on their utility bills.

Smart architectural decisions made early in the design process can dramatically improve comfort and reduce energy costs.

A few examples include:

• Strategic window placement to maximize natural light
• A tight building envelope with high-performance insulation
• Properly sized energy-efficient HVAC systems
