Why does a breaker trip once in a while, but everything seems perfectly normal after you reset it?

A circuit breaker is a safety device. Its job is to shut the circuit off when electrical conditions go beyond what that circuit is designed to safely handle.

Sometimes the cause is fairly simple—maybe several high-demand appliances were running on the same circuit at the same time.

But recurring trips can also be caused by things such as a worn device, failing appliance, loose connection, short circuit, or another electrical issue that needs to be diagnosed.

The important thing to pay attention to is the pattern.

If a breaker trips once because you plugged in several heavy loads at the same time, the cause may be obvious.

If the same breaker keeps tripping for no apparent reason, simply resetting it over and over isn’t really fixing anything. The breaker may actually be doing exactly what it’s supposed to do.

One of the most common things we hear with electrical problems is, “It still works, so I figured it was probably fine.”

That’s understandable—but intermittent electrical problems can sometimes tell you more than a complete failure.

A light that occasionally flickers, an outlet that feels loose, a switch that works only when you move it a certain way, or a breaker that trips every once in a while can indicate a worn device, loose connection, overloaded circuit, or another issue that deserves a closer look.

It doesn’t automatically mean there’s a major electrical problem. In many cases, the repair may be relatively simple.

The important part is figuring out why it’s happening instead of repeatedly resetting the breaker, wiggling the switch, or getting used to the problem.

If something electrical in your home has been acting a little strange lately, don’t ignore what it’s trying to tell you.

Resetting a tripped breaker may restore the power—but it doesn’t correct what caused it to trip.

If the same breaker repeatedly trips, the circuit needs to be properly diagnosed.

If the same breaker keeps tripping, it isn’t being annoying—it’s trying to tell you something.

Resetting it may restore the power, but it does not correct whatever caused it to trip.

A repeatedly tripping breaker could be caused by an overloaded circuit, a failing appliance, damaged wiring, a loose connection, or a problem with the breaker itself. The important part is determining why it is happening instead of repeatedly resetting it and hoping it stops.

That is the difference between replacing parts and actually troubleshooting an electrical problem.

If you have a breaker that keeps tripping, lights that flicker, an outlet that has stopped working, or another electrical issue that no one has properly explained, Fout Electric can help determine what is happening and what it will take to correct it.

WHY DOES A LICENSED ELECTRICIAN COST MORE?

We recently reviewed a project involving the replacement of two bathroom exhaust fans. At first glance, it sounds simple: remove two fans and install two new ones.

But one replacement fan also included an LED light. The bathroom already had separate controls for the vanity light and exhaust fan. If the homeowner wanted the new LED light controlled independently, the installation could require an additional switch, another conductor, attic access, and modifications to the existing wiring.

A complete installation also involves:

* Confirming that the existing wiring is safe and compatible
* Properly connecting and grounding the new equipment
* Evaluating the existing ductwork and airflow
* Sealing the duct connections
* Modifying ceiling openings when the new housings are different sizes
* Selecting the correct controls
* Testing every function after installation
* Protecting the homeowner if an unexpected condition is discovered

This is why a licensed electrician’s estimate may be higher than an estimate from an unlicensed installer.

You are not simply paying for the time it takes to mount the equipment. You are paying for training, experience, licensing, insurance, code compliance, proper tools, professional accountability, and someone who will stand behind the work.

An unlicensed installer may have significantly less overhead, but the homeowner may assume more of the risk if something is wired incorrectly, property is damaged, or the installation creates an electrical, moisture, or ventilation problem.

The lowest estimate is not always the lowest final cost.

Before hiring someone for electrical work, ask:

“Are you licensed and insured, and exactly what is included in your estimate?”

⚡ NOT SURE WHETHER YOU NEED AN ELECTRICIAN?

Many homeowners have a list of electrical projects but aren’t sure what requires a licensed electrician, whether a permit is needed, or if several small jobs can be completed during one visit.

High Ceiling Chandelier Replacement in Naperville

This foyer chandelier replacement in Naperville required more than a standard ladder.

The existing fixture was located on a tall vaulted ceiling, so we brought in the proper lift to safely access the work area, remove the old chandelier, and install the customer-supplied replacement.

The new chandelier made a huge difference in the entryway and completely changed the look of the space.

Fout Electric, LLC is now serving Naperville, Aurora, and surrounding areas for residential electrical work, including:

Lighting replacements
High ceiling fixtures
Troubleshooting
Outlets and switches
Small electrical projects
