Happy New Year!!

Its been raining ongoing for what seems like weeks in the Napa Valley. Heavy rains mean fast and hearty growth of annual tall grasses and other flammable plants. Annual dry grasses, especially invasive types like scotch broom, create extreme wildfire hazards by forming continuous, fine fuel beds that dry out early, ignite easily, and spread fire rapidly, increasing both frequency and size of fires, extending fire seasons, and turning native landscapes flammable. These grasses create a dangerous "fire-grass cycle" where fires promote more grass, leading to more fires, and also act as "ladder fuels" for fires to reach trees, significantly raising risks to communities and ecosystems. Its time to begin thinking about the early removal of these grasses. Think Spring!

Inferno Guard is ready to help with your home hardening or defensible space projects! Napa Firewise is offering grant money, up to $3500, to assist with this important and necessary work for those that live in the very high and high fire risk areas. In addition, The California Safe Homes Act (AB 888) is a new grant program designed to help California homeowners financially with wildfire mitigation, particularly for fire-resistant roofs and "Zone Zero" (the first five feet around a home) improvements, aiming to make homes safer and increase access to insurance. It provides funds for essential, costly projects that residents often can't afford and is part of a broader effort to build community resilience against wildfires, working alongside other initiatives like the Safer from Wildfires framework.

Berryessa Highlands Fire Safe Council will be hosting a community meeting at the Capell Valley Volunteer Fire Station this Saturday, May 31st from 11am to 1pm. Hope to see you there.

This Saturday, May 31st, the Berryessa Highlands Fire Safe Council will be hosting a community meeting at the Capell Valley Fire Station #214

Residents are encouraged to join the Berryessa Highlands FSC and neighborhood to learn about defensible space, home hardening, upcoming grants and programs, water district updates, etc.

OES (Office of Emergency Services), Napa County Sheriff's Office., CAL FIRE Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, NCFF (Napa Community Firewise Foundation), and Napa CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) will be there to answer your questions and tell you about free Emergency Training.

Oh, and did we mention, lunch? Tacos and cupcakes! Hope to see you there!

As we look ahead at fire season, let's all look inward to our own properties/homes to identify areas we can improve our own defensible space, home hardening, and individual wildfire preparedness.

If you live in a high or very high fire hazard severity zone, you may be eligible for up to $3,500 in reimbursements for a defensible space cost-share project.
