Our Story

Many people, when they look at nature, see myriad plants and animals living above ground, but perhaps forget that life below ground is equally rich and complex. Every teaspoon of earth contains millions of microbes all working to feed life above ground. If the beneficial microbes far outnumber the disease-causing microbes, healthy soil nurtures resilient, healthy plants and animals.

Pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and soil compaction damage the complex web of soil microorganisms that work to make nutrients and water available to plants. With few beneficial organisms to hold disease-causing organisms in check, pathogens can easily multiply and attack plants. Adding a high-quality compost can replenish the soil with beneficial microorganisms and improve soil fertility, structure, and water retention.

At Compost Santo, we sell thermal, aerobic compost made by heating organic matter in piles that are turned regularly to maintain optimal temperatures, moisture and oxygen levels. These methods encourage a high diversity of beneficial microbes and discourage pathogens.
