Putting gravel in the bottom of a pot seems like it should help drainage, but it actually does the opposite. 🪨

What actually helps: good drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix. That’s it! 🌱

Were you taught the gravel trick too?

🔥 If you garden somewhere hot like I do here in East Texas, pot color is one of the easiest fixes there is.

Just moved in a few thousand new employees. They work for food scraps and never take a day off. 🪱

Anyone else keep worms? Have yours ever tried to make a break for it?

(I got the red wigglers at Uncle Jim’s Worm Farm)

When fruit comes in faster than I can deal with it (or plums go on sale 👀), it goes straight into the freezer. Then on a free afternoon, it all turns into jam.

This time: raspberry-strawberry, red plum-raspberry, and black plum.

My go-to low-sugar jam ratio:
🍑 8 cups fruit (6 cups if chopped smaller)
🍑 2 cups sugar
🍑 3 tbsp low-sugar pectin
🍑 ¼ cup lemon juice

That’s about a quarter of the sugar most traditional recipes call for, so it actually tastes like fruit. Take a screenshot of the link below to see more jam/preserves recipes! 🔗

Yellowing leaves this time of year? Your citrus tree is probably just hungry. 🍊

Potted citrus can’t stretch their roots out for extra nutrients like in-ground trees can — so it’s on us to feed them well.

My go-to combo (every 2-4 weeks, depending on the weather, citrus type, etc):
🟢 Slow-release granular organic fertilizer, sprinkled around the drip line of the tree, watered in with:
🐟 Fish fertilizer, diluted according to the product instructions

One key detail: citrus want roughly 2-3x more nitrogen than phosphorus or potassium — so skip the all-purpose stuff.

A few gardening wins this week. You gotta celebrate the good things when they come :)

1. My first baby pineapple from a plant I grew from a grocery store pineapple
2. My new coffee tree from . I’ve been envious of my mom‘s massive coffee tree for a while so yay
3. Tons of tiny blossoms on my jujube
4. An overachieving Key lime tree
5. Lots of blueberries coming! Now let’s see if I can get to them before the squirrels

It’s my espalier apple tree’s turn to be pruned today. 🍎

Espalier fruit trees are a lesson in patience, but I know it’s going to be worth the wait (and work).

The main thing is getting rid of any extra branches that mess up the structure, and shortening the fruiting spurs down to 3-4 buds.

Will I get fruit this year? It’s year 3, so here’s hoping. 🤞

Hardy kiwi pruning!

Just like a grapevine, hardy kiwi can take a lot of pruning and needs to be cut back pretty heavily every winter.

It’s a young vine so it hasn’t fruited yet, but hopefully this will be the year! 🥝
