The KOHLER 20RCA is a good example of why generator sizing should start with the house, not a model number.

The 20RCA is rated at 20 kW on liquid propane and 18 kW on natural gas. KOHLER's PowerBoost™ technology is designed to start large electrical loads without dropping power to other appliances — useful when central air conditioning is part of the backup plan.

For coastal installations, two specifications stand out: an aluminum enclosure and an enclosure design tested to withstand winds up to 181 mph. KOHLER also lists a 10-second response time for the 20RCA.

Horry County has seen seven power outages since March. The causes: afternoon thunderstorms, a blown substation arrestor, a snake in Red Hill, and a Mylar balloon tangled in a utility pole in North Myrtle Beach.

In South Carolina, a power outage after a hurricane isn't just an inconvenience. In the middle of summer it becomes a health risk quickly — particularly for elderly residents, young children, and anyone who depends on powered medical equipment.

Most of the serious outcomes are preventable. The mistakes that send people to the hospital are almost always ones that happened because someone didn't know a rule, not because they ignored it.

The most important one: never run a generator indoors or in an attached garage. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless. It builds up fast in enclosed spaces and gives no warning. It's responsible for more storm-related deaths than most people realize, and it happens in homes where someone simply didn't know the placement rule.

A few guidelines worth knowing before a storm hits:

— Keep the refrigerator door closed. With the door shut, food stays safe for about four hours. A full freezer holds for 48.

— Generators must be placed at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent — including a neighbor's.

— Do not use a gas oven or stove for heat under any circumstances.

— Check on elderly neighbors early and often. Heat and isolation are a dangerous combination in the days after a storm.

NOAA released its 2026 Atlantic hurricane season outlook two weeks ago. The headline is encouraging — forecasters are calling for a below-normal season, with a 55% probability and developing El Niño conditions expected to help suppress Atlantic activity.

That’s genuinely good news. But it comes with the caveat NOAA states directly: it only takes one storm to make it a bad season.

For Horry County, the takeaway is simple: seasonal numbers don’t matter much if the one storm that does form tracks toward our coast.

We’ve seen that play out firsthand. The storms that caused the most damage here weren’t always tied to the most active seasons. They were the ones that formed, moved toward the coast, and found residents who weren’t ready.

The window between now and peak season — August through October — is the most valuable time you have. Parts are available. Installers have openings. There’s no storm in the forecast creating a rush.
