Most conversations about standby generators start with a size. They should start with a fuel.

The same generator produces a different rating depending on what it runs on. A KOHLER unit rated 26 kW on liquid propane is rated 24 kW on natural gas — same engine, same machine, different number. That difference lands in the middle of the sizing conversation, which is why fuel belongs at the front of it.

With natural gas, the generator connects to your home's existing utility gas line. There's no tank on the property to monitor or refill.

With propane, fuel is stored in a tank on your property and delivered by a supplier. How long the generator can run depends on the size of the tank and how much load the generator is carrying, so tank size and fill level become part of your outage plan.

The KOHLER 26RCA is rated at 26 kW on liquid propane and 24 kW on natural gas. On propane, KOHLER lists 109 amps of output from the generator's CH1006 engine.
