Most people will look at these ceilings and think, "Wow, that looks awesome."

An electrician looks at them and thinks, "Well... where am I supposed to hide the wires?" πŸ˜‚

The customer wanted exposed rafters for that modern farmhouse look, which turned out beautiful. The challenge was keeping it that way without a bunch of Romex taking away from the clean, open ceiling.

After a little planning, we ran an individual cable behind each beam and popped it up directly into each light. It kept the wiring nearly invisible while still doing everything the right way.

It's one of those little details most people will never notice... and that's exactly the point.

I think it turned out pretty slick. What do you think?

Not every service call ends with replacing a breaker or an outlet.

This customer had a tree fall onto their service drop. The neutral snapped, but somehow the two hot wires held the tree up. One of those hot wires ended up welding itself to the metal siding, energizing the entire exterior of the house.

The first clue? My non-contact voltage tester started screaming the moment I brought it near the siding.

Even stranger, the house was still somehow getting 120/240 volts through a shared metal water pipe connected to the neighbor's property. My best guess is that the energized siding arced to the plumbing, which is what started the small fire behind the house.

At that point, there wasn't much I could safely do. The damaged utility service belonged to the power company, so I called Met-Ed for the homeowners since they didn't speak English and made sure help was on the way.

Some days being an electrician feels more like being a detective. Every strange problem is another chance to learn something new.

Ever wonder why lights flicker every time the refrigerator kicks on? πŸ€”

Today's service call started with a customer complaining that their refrigerators wouldn't run properly, and every time something with a heavier load turned on, the lights throughout the house would flicker.

I started by troubleshooting the branch circuits, but it didn't take long to notice the voltage was dropping to around 80 volts whenever a load was applied.

The culprit? A corroded neutral conductor in the service cable. The drip loop was too small, so over the years, allowed water to work its way into the cable. The entire house was essentially trying to return current through a single remaining strand of the neutral.

Once the problem was identified, the fix was straightforward: replace the service.

Another happy customer, and another reminder that every service call teaches you something new. ⚑🐘

I kinda prefer these cheaper cardboard bins. They fit closer together than those plastic bins and cost way less.
