Go look at the sticker on your water heater...go ahead! We will be waiting...

The first four digits of the serial number tell you roughly when it was born. Over ten years old? Congratulations, your water heater is legally old enough to have opinions! 🤣

Here's the thing about water heaters: they don't give notice. They don't decline gradually. They pick a moment — Thanksgiving morning, your in-laws in the guest room, somebody mid-shampoo — and they let go all at once onto the floor you just refinished.

You should consider replacing your water heater if it is between 8-12 years old. Also, there is a growing trend of home insurance companies that will not renew homeowners policy if the water heater is beyond a certain age, check with your insurance company to see if they have such a rule!

A word of caution on this one! ⚠️

Capacitors store an electrical charge even after the power is shut off — enough to seriously injure someone. Cutting the disconnect doesn't make it safe. It must be discharged properly before anyone touches the terminals.

It's a common, quick repair for a professional technician with the right tools, like Joel!
