This kitchen needed something different than a regular tear out and replacement of cabinets. The counter tops are quartz and relatively new. I didn't want to take the risk of breakage trying to remove them. So new custom upper cabinets and a pantry cabinet were built. For the lower cabinets and island is built new doors, drawer fronts, and drawer boxes. I installed new drawer slides, tip out hinges with trays, and pulls. The old base cabinets were re-faced with plywood and laminate all finished with the same stain and high grade finishes as the upper cabinets. It is almost impossible to match an old stain and finish exactly. So this needed to be done. New toe kicks and base moldings were also installed along with a new trash can pull out. So basically a new kitchen look can be achieved without the high cost of a new kitchen.

The barn doors project is getting closer. The first picture shows the V grooves cut into the panels to make the panels look like separate boards. The second shows weatherstrip installed to allow the floating panels to expand and contract through the seasons and it also prevents the panels from rattling. The third shows the joint used to hold the panels in place. They are glued together. Still quite a bit left to do. Stay tuned.

Here is a continuation of the original barn doors post that I started. It has been a few days since I have taken the time to follow up. The pictures show how I construct the floating panels and the door frames. Notice the joint that I use to join boards together for wide panels. I have never had a joint fail and alignment is so much easier that just gluing boards together without it. I also have pictures of how the joints for the frames are made. The grooves cut in the frames will accept the panels. I also have a picture of a beam that I am making to attach to the ceiling and hang the door track from. A local contractor from Jacksonville IL named Billy Wilson suggested to Yingling Builders based out of Macomb IL that they should hire me to build a couple interior barn doors for a new house that they were building in Quincy IL. So I met with the project manager named Wyatt Stucker at the house in Quincy after discussing the project over the phone. I took measurements and submitted my bid and the bid was accepted. So today I began the construction of the doors. There is quite a process involved to build doors that will last a lifetime without much bowing or twisting to the doors. I started with rough sawn hard maple lumber. I prefer using rough sawn lumber because I can usually get a little bit more thickness out of the lumber than just buying 3/4" thick lumber. In this case the lumber started out at around 1 1/8" and by the time I was finished flattening and planing the lumber I ended up with 7/8" thick boards which was exactly what I was looking for. After planing the boards to thickness, I glued two boards together. This will give me 1 3/4" of thickness. Gluing the two boards together will help eliminate any bowing. These boards will end up being the door frames. After the glue dries I will flatten those boards again and plane to a thickness of 1 1/2" which will be the thickness of the doors. The pictures show the rough sawn lumber and the boards clamped and glued. Stay tuned for more progress.
