When we draw trees as kids we think that the roots of the trees are copies of the limbs above, and they stretch down into the dirt, but most roots only grow in the top 6-10inches of soil, and they grow out, creating a pancake of roots that make a base for the tree to stand on while searching for water and nutrients.

Ask almost any Arborist about Bradford Pears and they have a similar view. Their growth pattern makes for bad branch attachments that tend to break, they stink in the summer when they flower, they are invasive, and they shouldn't be planted anymore.

Agreed. Mulch volcanoes that cover the root ball can cause excess moisture and lead to rot and cause stress on the tree, among other problems.
