When you call, you get me. Erick.

You don't get a call center in another state or a crew that drove in yesterday chasing a storm.

You get a local guy who owns the business. My name is on the truck, and my reputation is on every job. I live here. My kids go to school here. I run into my customers at the grocery store.

That means I have to stand behind every single roof we touch. There's no disappearing act after the check is cashed. If you have a question a year from now, you know who to call.

That’s the difference between hiring a truck and hiring a professional who is part of your community.

If you want a roofer who will still be here to answer your call long after the job is done, give me a call.

We've covered the Metal vs. Shingle debate, and the surprising strengths of modern shingles. Now, let's talk about metal. When is it the right call?

1. Ultimate Longevity: This is metal's biggest selling point. A well-installed standing-seam metal roof can last 50+ years, sometimes longer. If you're in your "forever home" and never want to think about your roof again, it's a serious contender.

2. Energy Efficiency: Metal roofs reflect solar heat, which can help keep your attic cooler and potentially lower your energy bills in the hot Kentucky summers.

3. Specific Design Goals: Metal offers a modern, clean, or classic farmhouse look that shingles just can't replicate. If your home's aesthetic demands it, metal is the answer.

The Bottom Line: Both are great products. One isn't automatically "better" than the other.

The choice depends entirely on your situation. How long you plan to be in the home, your budget, and the style you're going for all matter.

Don't let anyone sell you a roof. Work with someone who will teach you about your options. Give us a call, and we’ll give you the straight scoop for your home.

Yesterday we asked: Metal or Shingles? Today, let's make the case for modern architectural shingles.

If you think "shingles" and picture flat, cheap-looking squares, you're about 20 years behind. The technology has changed the game.

1. The Look: Architectural shingles give you a thick, dimensional look that mimics natural slate or wood shake. You get a high-end aesthetic without the crazy price tag.

2. The Durability: These aren't your dad's shingles. They are heavier, with multiple laminated layers. They offer fantastic protection against wind, rain, and everything Kentucky weather throws at them. Many come with 30-year or even lifetime warranties.

3. The Value: This is the big one. For the vast majority of homes, a professionally installed architectural shingle roof gives you the best possible protection for your investment. You get decades of performance for a significantly lower upfront cost than metal.

A metal roof is a great product. But don't count shingles out. For many homeowners, they are the smartest, most cost-effective choice for a beautiful, long-lasting roof.

Tomorrow, we'll cover the case for metal.

Let's talk about the biggest question in roofing right now: Metal or Shingles?

A lot of people call us convinced they need a metal roof. They've heard it's the "best" and will last forever. And sometimes, it is the right choice.

But here’s the truth: The "best" roof is the one that's right for your home, your budget, and your goals. Today’s architectural shingles are not the basic shingles of 20 years ago. The technology is incredible, and in many cases, they are the smarter financial choice.

You don't need a salesman pushing you toward the more expensive option. You need an expert who will walk you through the real pros and cons of both.

Over the next two posts, I'm going to break down the honest case for each.

First up tomorrow: The surprising value of architectural shingles.

After a hailstorm, the first truck that pulls in your driveway isn't always your friend.

It’s usually an out-of-town crew chasing the storm. They’ll knock on every door, promise you a "free roof" from the insurance company, and pressure you to sign a contract on the spot.

You don't need pressure. You need a professional.

Someone who will get up on your roof, look it over in person, and tell you the truth about what it actually needs. A lot of the time, an honest estimate for a simple repair saves you money and a mark on your insurance record.

If your roof took a beating this season, don't just sign with the first person who shows up. Call someone local. Give us a call and we'll come take a real look.

Here's what happens when you call us:

We set a time. We show up. We get on the roof ourselves, not an assistant, not a sub, us.

We take photos of what we find. We show you what we saw. We tell you what it needs and what it doesn't.

If it's a small repair, we'll tell you that. If it needs more work, we'll walk you through why.

No upsell pressure. No vague estimate you have to decode.

Just straight information so you can make a good decision.

That's it. That's the whole process.

If the August 19th and 20th storms tore up your roof, here's what actually matters right now.

Those storms hit us hard across Western Kentucky. Straight-line winds ran 80 to 105 mph, an EF-1 tornado touched down in Carlisle County, and some areas took 3 to 7 inches of rain on top of it. The highest gust actually measured was 82 mph, right at the Murray airport.

One thing worth clearing up, because I've seen it going around: this was wind and rain, not hail. The 2 inch hail folks are sharing fell in Missouri, not here. What hit your roof was wind, and that's a different animal.

So here's what I'd do first.

Stay off the roof. Wind weakens decking in ways you can't see from a ladder, and it's not worth a fall. Walk the yard and look up from the ground. Steer clear of any downed line, even a dead-looking one.

Check your attic and ceilings for water. A stain or a drip means water's already getting in, and that's a today problem, not a next-week one.

Get a tarp on anything exposed, fast. We've still got afternoon rain rolling through, and open decking can turn a roof problem into a ceiling and insulation problem with the very next shower.

Then have somebody actually look at it. Not every roof needs replacing after a storm like this. Some came through fine, some didn't, and the only honest way to know is to get a person up there safely to check. Guessing from the driveway doesn't cut it.

One more, because it happens after every big storm. Out-of-town trucks are already showing up. Most are fine, but do yourself a favor: ask for a local address, not just a phone number, check their license and insurance, and don't hand anybody a big cash payment or sign anything on the spot under pressure.

We're based right here in Murray. We were serving these counties before this storm and we'll be here long after it. Same goes for plenty of good local crews, so use those same checks on anybody, us included.

Your insurance is between you and your company. I won't tell you what they'll cover or how to file. What I will do is get up there, tell you plain what I see, and help you sort out what happens next.

Nobody calls a roofer when things are going well.

We get that.

We show up on the worst weather days, after the storms, when something's leaking, when the insurance adjuster just left and you're not sure what happens next.

That's the job. And we don't mind it.

Just want you to know there's somebody local you can actually call when it matters.

Most people don't think about their roof until there's a problem.

That's fine. That's kind of the whole point of a good roof.

But here's what we look at on every inspection that most homeowners never think to check:

Flashing around chimneys and vents. That's where water sneaks in before there's any visible shingle damage.

Gutters pulling away from the fascia board. Usually means there's rot behind them.

Granule loss in gutters. Shingles tell you they're aging before they start leaking.

A 20-minute look twice a year catches 90% of problems before they become expensive ones.

The cheapest bid is almost never the best deal.

Especially in roofing.

Low bids usually mean one of three things: cheaper materials, faster crews cutting corners, or a contractor who underbid and will cut scope to make the job work.

You're not buying a commodity. You're buying 20 years of protection over everything you own.

Get three bids. Ask what's included. Ask about the crew. Ask how long they've worked in the area.

Price is one number. Value is a different conversation.
