🚨A locksmith who was shot while assisting deputies with an eviction notice died Sunday evening from his injuries, marking the second death from a violent confrontation that also claimed the life of a sheriff’s sergeant two days earlier, authorities said.
David Long, 76, succumbed to wounds sustained in the Friday shootout in Indian River County, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
Long was performing his duties alongside Sgt. Terri Sweeting-Mashkow and Deputy Tino Arizpe when the incident unfolded.
The shooting erupted Friday morning at a home in the Bermuda Club community on Governors Way, where deputies were serving an eviction notice.
The suspect, identified as Michael Halberstam, opened fire on the group, killing Sweeting-Mashkow, 47, on the scene and critically injuring Arizpe and Long. Deputies returned fire, and Halberstam died Saturday night from his injuries.
Arizpe, a 25-year veteran of the agency who was shot in the shoulder, was released from the hospital Sunday and continues his recovery.
Sheriff Eric Flowers, in the statement announcing Long’s death, expressed deep sorrow over the loss.
“Our hearts are broken once again by this tragic news,” Flowers said. “David Long was a resident of our community, a dedicated professional who was simply doing his job when he was caught in an unthinkable act of violence. His loss, following Sergeant Mashkow’s, is a reminder of the sacrifices made, not just by our sworn deputies, but by the everyday heroes who assist us. We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.”
Long, remembered for his dedicated service and kind demeanor, will be deeply missed by family, friends and the community, the statement said.
