We just wrapped a wood fence restoration on the north side of Chicago — 1,225 linear feet surrounding a home's backyard. After power washing and letting the wood dry out, we applied one coat of TWP 1500 Series oil-based semi-transparent sealer, working through the posts and bracing before moving to the pickets and covering both faces wherever we could reach. The homeowner had cleared access with neighbors ahead of time, which kept the whole day on track. Fence staining isn't just about looks - it's what keeps the wood from cupping, splitting, and rotting out on you. We recently handled a project with 152' x 5' stained on the interior side and a 16' x 5' section done on both sides where the fence gets more sun and rain exposure. We match the approach to how each section actually gets hit by weather. Got a fence that needs the same kind of attention? Happy to take a look.

The homeowner wanted to keep the original character of this deck rather than replace everything just because it was showing its age.

After looking it over, we identified the areas that actually needed repairs, took care of the damaged wood, and restored the rest of the deck.

The result still feels like their deck; just repaired, refreshed, and ready for more years of use.

This deck had definitely seen better days.

The finish was heavily worn, some areas needed immediate attention, and a few boards had to be replaced before we could think about the final look.

Instead of giving up on the whole deck, we repaired what needed to be repaired and restored what was still worth keeping.

A pretty big difference from where we started — and a good example of why an older, weathered deck doesn’t automatically mean a full replacement.

Sanding a deck isn’t just about making the boards look smooth.

The real purpose is getting the wood properly prepared for the finish. That means paying attention to the railings, edges, tight areas, and even what’s sitting between the boards.

Those little details might not look important while we’re working, but they make a difference once the stain goes on.

Good deck restoration starts with good prep.

A fresh coat is only as good as the work underneath it.

With an older deck like this, most of the job happens before we ever open a can of stain. The old finish needs to come off, the wood needs to be properly prepared, and only then are we ready for the final application.

Skip the prep and you’ll usually see it in the finish sooner rather than later.

A lot of homeowners look at an older deck and assume replacement is the next step.

Not always.

If the structure and most of the wood are still in good condition, we can often repair the problem areas and restore what’s already there. That’s exactly why we look at the whole deck before recommending what should be done.

The goal isn’t to replace more than you need. It’s to get the deck back into good shape and help it last.

If your deck is starting to show its age, give us a call and we’ll take a look.

Sometimes a deck restoration turns into a little more than cleaning and staining.

Once we inspected this deck, we found areas that needed to be replaced before we could move forward. There’s no point putting a nice finish over wood that’s already failing.

We took care of the necessary repairs, gave the new wood enough time to dry, and then came back to finish the restoration.

That’s the difference between making a deck look better and actually taking care of it properly.

September is actually the best month to stain or seal your deck. The humidity drops, temps are mild, and the wood has had all summer to dry out - which means better absorption and a finish that'll actually hold up through a Chicago winter. If you've been putting it off, now's the window before it gets too cold for the sealant to cure properly. We're booking staining jobs around Naperville, Northbrook, and the city now through October.

An older deck doesn’t necessarily need a big repair.

We checked this one over and found no rotten boards to replace — just three loose posts that needed to be fixed.

Once those were taken care of, it was all about giving the deck a fresh stain and bringing the wood back to life. 🪵

A few fixes and the right maintenance can go a long way.
