Crew members Luke & Timber had the great opportunity to assist with phase 1 of the Marwin Strong Park. This operation is being led by Marwin’s son, Zion Strong. In collaboration with him and many other volunteers today, we were able to significantly improve the park and move 1 step closer towards the end goal.
We assisted them with restoring the edges of all the sidewalks, picnic table and bench areas. We edged all of these areas, removed and then blew off the remaining dirt/debris for a clean finish. We were able to help blow off the basketball court of weeds that had been cut from the cracks. This saved some of the kiddo volunteers from sweeping the whole court with brooms!
Keeping the sidewalk edges clean and crisp serves multiple purposes besides aesthetics! A sidewalk/paved area with well maintained edges will do the following:
•✅ keeps the sidewalks accessible for those with mobility issues or wheelchair bound
•✅ protects the sidewalk from potential freeze/thaw damage. A lot of sidewalks get damage from weeds growing in cracks, leading to freeze/thaw damage over the years.  This causes sidewalks to fail prematurely, meaning a costly replacement of the sidewalk.
•✅ helps with storm drainage. Keeping the sidewalk. helps keep the storm drains clear and draining as they should.
•✅ improves the safety of the environment with less tripping hazards and a clean, clear, and safe place to walk.
Overall with everyone coming together between ourselves, numerous volunteers and Muncie Clean & Beautiful, we were able to transform the park today. This park is located right next to a local neighborhood in downtown Muncie. This will serve the children of this neighborhood greatly as they will have a safer and more suitable area to play! As Zion continues to accomplish this huge goal, the park will become a safe haven for a lot of these kids.
