Jeffrey Dungan Architects Award winning custom residential design with boutique projects across the country and internationally We truly believe design has that kind of power.

Jeffrey Dungan discovered a love for art and drawing at a young age while growing up on a family farm in rural Alabama. The surrounding nature with its trees of elegance and verticality would become the inspiration for years of studying and creating beautiful architecture. After graduating from Auburn University, Dungan would eventually start Dungan-Nequette 1999 and lead the company to dozens of awards for residential and commercial design from Nova Scotia to the Bahamas. Located in the rolling topography of Birmingham, AL, Dungan started Jeffery Dungan Architects in 2015. Jeffery Dungan Architects is a passionate group who take pride in the creative design. Our work takes a clean and modern approach to traditional vernaculars and classical architecture. The mission is simple: to affect the livelihood of our clients in a way that simply enriches their lives. Whether building in Maine, Napa or Ireland, each of JDA’s projects begins and ends the with people we are fortunate enough to work with. In all of our creative endeavors we enjoy wonderful relationships that last well beyond the finished structure. The work created for our clients has been featured in publications from The Wall Street Journal to Garden & Gun. In 2015 Jeffrey Dungan was honored to be named a Fellow by the Institute of Classical Art and Architecture.

I recently spoke with ESPN about Cooper Kupp and the experience of working with him and his family on Dodo Coffee Company. The idea was never simply to make a coffee shop.

It was to create a place that gave weight to a small daily ritual; arriving, slowing down, meeting someone, sharing a cup.

I’m always interested in the way light can shape a room, especially when it meets materials with real weight and character. Stone, dark wood, plaster, deep color — all of it becomes more alive as the day moves across it.

In these lake houses, the goal is to create contrast. Strong textures, quiet shadows, moments of warmth, and openings that pull your eye back toward the water.

The light softens the architecture. The materials give the light something to hold onto.

That tension is where so much of the feeling lives.

We’re proud to share that Jeffrey Dungan Architects has been named on two Forbes’ lists this year: America’s Top 200 Residential Architects and America’s Best-in-State Residential Architects.

It’s the kind of recognition that means a great deal, not because we set out chasing it, but because it speaks to something we care about deeply: doing the work well, project after project, site after site. We’re grateful to Forbes for the honor, and grateful to the clients, collaborators, and craftsmen who make it possible.

A quiet richness lives in the meeting of old and new—deep tones, natural textures, and the weight of traditional craftsmanship set against modern art, sculptural fixtures, and a few carefully chosen gestures.

Nothing asks for too much attention. Each element simply belongs, creating a harmony that feels collected, grounded, and deeply at ease.

Happy Birthday to the best life partner, mom, coach, person and woman I ever met. You are patient, kind, highly intelligent and except for your taste in men, almost perfect. Your sense of style and appreciation of beauty only matched by your own. You are classy and yet never too classy to talk or care about everyone else. What a treat it is for the rest of us buzzing around you, needing your attention advice and aid to all of our life details which somehow you give to everyone- making us all feel a little more special and loved, just to be in your orbit…

Happy Birthday

Still carrying the warmth of last week at Daniel George. So grateful to everyone who came to celebrate The Soulful House with us—and to those who couldn’t be there, but sent their love and joined us in spirit. A beautiful evening made even more meaningful by the friends, family, clients, collaborators, and familiar faces who have been part of this journey. Thank you for sharing in it with us.

Every book begins with a conversation. This one began with memories of the first. Years had passed since its release, and it had reached more people than I ever imagined it would. I found myself reflecting on the road between those two books, on the work, the friendships, the failures, the lessons, and the houses that had shaped me as much as I had shaped them.

It became clear that a second book could not simply be another collection of projects. It needed to reveal something beneath the architecture. Not only the breadth of the work, but the values that gave it meaning in the first place.

“The Soulful House” is available now @ the link in my bio.

In the end, a house is never about architecture. It is about the life that slowly gathers inside it. I wanted Villa Lindsey to feel older than it is—not because it imitates the past, but because it respects the things that have always mattered.

A good house should become more itself with every passing year. It should wear time with grace. If I have done my work well, the architecture will eventually disappear, leaving only the feeling that this place could never have been any other way.

I have never believed that beauty comes from accumulation. It comes from restraint, from proportion, from knowing when enough has already been said.

The stone was chosen because it looked as though it had risen from the earth nearby. The plaster carries the mark of the hand that spread it. Light was given the same consideration as stone or timber because it is the one material that changes by the hour. Morning, afternoon, and evening each tell the house a different story. That is what gives architecture its life.
